Old Crow, 2019

Last year, from April 20th to April 28th I had the opportunity to join students from Old Crow, Yukon on their Culture Camp.

Old Crow is in the Northern Yukon Territory. It is north of the Arctic Circle!

There are 221 people that live in Old Crow. Most people there are Gwich'in, which is a First Nations people of the Northern Yukon Territory. There are no roads to Old Crow. You must fly in a small Airplane to get there.

When i first arrived, we went to the Teacher's home. Then we went to the school and stayed there while a snow/wind storm happened. After waiting a day, we were able to get out to the Culture Camp. We travelled by skidoo.

There were other students that went to the Culture Camp. We were all in Grade one, two, and three. I was in Grade two. We slept in wall tents and we stayed warm from the wood stove.

I went out with an Elder and learned how to trap Rabbits:

We had to do chores such as doing dishes and gathering firewood:

We also had to butcher and dry wild meat:

We ate as a group. We ate Moose, Rabbit, Bannock, and Pancakes!

And there was still time for fun and games!

After three days it was time to go home.

I would highly recommend Culture Camps for kids! It was especially great because I got to go with my Grandma!

  1. What a beautiful experience you had with your Grandma, Jackson. And all you kids so young and out on the land learning from elders and eating traditional foods. I would love that. After hearing what you ate, I am inspired to go cook up some bannock. Mussi cho
