Jackson's Spring Break 2016

During the Spring of 2016, I took a week out of Kindergarten to go to the Yukon territory with my family. This is my on-the-land learning adventure from that trip:

Today, we arrived in the Yukon and went for a hike.

We visited the Yukon Wildlife Preserve and had a chance to look at 13 species of northern Canadian mammals in their natural habitat.

We used a map to help us travel around the Preserve.

I drew a picture of two animals. I added the English name and the Kaska name to my pictures.

With all the snow, we rode on a Kicksled.

We built a snow fort with a tunnel and a lookout area.

All complete!

We also built a snow slide!

On our last day we did the same hike that we did on the first day. We inquired into what changes have occurred since our last visit:

We discovered that much of the snow melted under the trees.

We don't have a word in English for these spaces, so we learnt a new word: Quamanik

An Inuit name for the melted spaces under spruce and fir trees.

  1. I love March in the Yukon when winter changes into spring, when the days are long, and the snow can be so beautifully hard for easy travel on top, or disappear in a few days as you found out. Not all snow melts. It can also sublimate. Your blog with its pictures and narrative reminded me of good times in the Yukon in March.
